Domain, hosting and website: what do you actually need?

A domain is the name people use to reach you. Hosting provides a place for the site to run. The website is the content and software visitors use. Buying one does not automatically buy the other two.

Start with the job, not the package

For a simple service business, write down the pages you need, who will update them and whether customers must book or buy online. A website builder may combine editing and hosting; a WordPress site needs a compatible hosting plan. A domain can connect to either approach.

Make a three-line inventory

  • Name: which account owns the domain, and when does it renew?
  • Site: which system edits your pages, and where are its backups?
  • Connections: who hosts DNS and business email?

For example, moving a WordPress site to new hosting does not require transferring its domain registration. You may only need a DNS change. Likewise, renewing a domain will not restore deleted website files.

Before checkout

Compare the complete setup: the domain term, hosting term, email needs and recovery options. Avoid buying a second hosting plan until you know what your existing website uses. If you are unsure, gather the domain name and provider names for support; never send passwords or transfer codes in a public message.

Your next step

Search domain availability. Confirm current availability, inclusions and billing terms before purchasing.
